How to Choose Healthy Dog Treats
I’m betting that keeping your dog healthy and providing a healthy diet for her is important to you, just as it is to me. I want Skipper to be with us for many years, and to make that happen, I need to help her stay healthy.
Our dogs are totally dependent on us for the food that they eat, and dog treats are part of a healthy dog diet. Dog biscuits and cookies need to be counted as food, because they do play a part in your dog’s nutrition.
dog treats can be fun!
Here are some things to consider when you are choosing dog treats for your dog:
- Healthy ingredients - Check out the list of ingredients in the dog treats. The healthier the ingredients, the healthier the treats. Whole grains and flours, healthy meats, vegetables and fruits can add to the nutrition in treats for dogs.
- Safe ingredients - Some ingredients just are not good for dogs. I still am surprised at the number of commercial dog treats that include garlic or onions, which can damage your dog’s red blood cells and cause hemolytic anemia, over time.
- Additives - I like to keep things natural, with the fewest additives possible. Look for added coloring, preservatives and other chemicals.
- Flavors - Your dog probably has developed a liking for certain flavors and ingredients. Does she favor pumpkin dog treats or peanut butter dog treats? Perhaps chicken is her very favorite. Choose dog treats that include what your dog loves best!
- Appeal - Just like people, dogs often like a particular treat that other dogs like. Listen to what others say about their dogs’ favorite treats.
- Special needs - If your dog has a medical condition, you will need to be especially aware of ingredients in dog treats. Choose healthy dog treats that will not aggravate your dog’s condition, and those that will help him feel better!
Choosing healthy dog treats is not so daunting as it might appear, at first. Simply pick a flavor or type above, and start browsing. You’ll find that a few interesting treats will speak to you. And soon your dog will be “speaking” for them!
