Do Bichon Frises Need a Coat in Winter?

by Denise Kusel
(New Mexico)

I just adopted a 1 1/2-year-old Bichon Frise from the local shelter. She's a mix.

My Bichon recently had puppies and she was found wandering along the highway. She had been abused.

We are going for her second grooming. The first was to get all the blood off of her.

Now, she has a bed, toys, good food other dogs to run with on 5 acres. She wears a special collar for an invisible fence. She is quite loving.

I have been wondering about other folks and their Bichons. How are they in the winter? Do they need a coat?

Heartbreaking & Uplifting
by: Joan

Boy, it breaks my heart when I hear of any abused animal, but a bichon even more. She is so lucky that you chose her from the shelter...love her to bits and she'll do the same.

I don't ever get the full 'round head' Bichon cut for my Buffy...I prefer the puppy clip...the regular cut reminds me more of show dogs.

If you don't keep her clipped regularly in the winter too, she'll really get matted from the snow, and it isn't fun for the Bichons either, so again that's why I prefer the shorter cut.

Winter Coat for Bichon?
by: Anonymous

This Bichon will be lucky to have you in her life. She needs lots of love and praise, but no she does not need a winter coat.

Bichons will grow a lovely thick coat if it is not trimmed too short in the winter. A short cut is good in summer, as they do not do well in the heat.

A nice warm home and a snugglie pet bed and blanket will keep her comfy in winter.
