Products to Help Your Incontinent Dog

Dog incontinence products are available to help Bichon Frise owners with pets who have trouble controlling their pee.

When your dog has canine incontinence, he pees involuntarily and has no control. He may or may not know that this is happening.

There are natural dog remedies for your pet such as a waterproof dog bed and disposable dog diapers to help him cope with canine urinary incontinence

Even though dog incontinence is frustrating for you, there are a number of effective products that can help you and your dog cope with this issue.

‭Dog incontinence products like doggie diapers can help an older dog.

Natural remedies like Pet Care Science’s Bladder Strength and Kidney Function Chews help control dog incontinence.

Who Has Dog Incontinence?

Old dogs are not the only ones who become incontinent, but they are the first that come to mind.

Dogs who are anxious and high strung can also exhibit stress incontinence. We should also include dogs who have separation anxiety, those who are afraid of storms, really passive dogs and those who simply get excited when company is at the door.

Dogs who have a urinary tract infection are often incontinent. This of course, is reversible when the infection is gone. You can test for UTIs with a simple test at home, if this is a recurring problem for your Bichon Frise.

If your dog is extremely excitable or anxious, a product like Tru Dog’s Calm Me may be all that you need to solve the problem.

Even little puppies who are learning to go outside can have accidents.  This takes patience, but it will be over in a short time.

Natural Dog Incontinence Remedies

My first choice to help an incontinent dog is to control his peeing with a natural product. These products also improve bladder health:

  • Homeopathic remedies – It may be possible to stop your pet’s leakage, or at least improve on his control.
  • Herbal remedies – Herbs can help strengthen the kidneys and improve bladder muscle tone.
  • Natural foods like cranberries or blueberries – You could give your dog a supplement or simply look for berries in natural dog treats.

Products to Protect Your Home

If foods or natural products don’t work, your next step should be to protect your home and your dog’s sleeping areas. As much as you love your Bichon Frise, there is a limit and you need to handle the odor and the mess.

So, for every area in your home that has been damaged or smells of dog urine, you’ll need a stain and odor eliminator–this one works using natural enzymes and is safe to use around kids and dogs.  To make sure that you get all the little puddles, you might want to invest in this inexpensive UV black light flashlight that picks up urine stains.  It will help you keep your home fresh smelling and stain free.

If your dog has accidents in her bed (or yours) overnight, there are a few ways to handle it:

Dog bed with small white dog is made for dog incontinence.A bed designed for incontinent dogs
can help solve the problem for night time incontinence. This bed has a pan to catch the urine underneath it. It eliminates your having to wash bedding every day.

dog bed with washable cover for small breedsThe bed is raised, so if your dog has arthritis or hip dysplasia, you might want to consider getting a bed with a washable cover, like the one pictured on the left.  It sits on the ground for dogs who have trouble jumping higher.

Urine proof cover for incontinent dogs
A urine proof cover will protect your furniture from escaping pee.

If your need to protect your furniture, car seats, carpet or other areas in your home where your dog hangs out, you might want to consider a fleece waterproof and urine proof dog throw.  This one comes in a number of designs and you can use it for yourself, as well.

The dog throw shown here does not lose its waterproofing after washing, and it can be washed in hot water to sterilize it. Then just throw it in the dryer. Look for those features when purchasing one.

Dog Incontinence Products for Female Dogs

Dog diapers for incontinent dogs
Consider using reusable dog diapers for your female incontinent pet.

When your dog becomes incontinent, they are just like a baby, not able to control dripping.

One solution is to use reusable diapers. They are environmentally conscious and can be washed over and over.

Another advantage to using washable dog diapers is that they are soft, not abrasive or crinkly.

Of course some people prefer disposable diapers for their dog. And they sure can be handy if you are traveling.

They have their own design for disposable female dog diapers. The ones shown on the left turn urine into gel, eliminating watery leaks.

Diapers for the girls are fashioned more like baby diapers.

That being the case, they sometimes slip and slide when they are on a dog, and they can leak around the edges.

Diaper keeper for male dogs
A diapers keeper will help keep your male dog’s diapers in place.

The solution to that problem is the Dog Diapers Keeper (pictured to the right). Invented by a vet, this dog apparel is fashionable, but its main purpose is to keep dog diapers in place.

Made for both male and female dogs, it keeps diapers and pads securely in place. The Diapers Keeper is made of soft stretchy fabric, so it is also comfortable.

You can machine wash and dry it to keep it clean and sanitary.

Products for Male Dogs

Male dog diapers
Male dogs need different diapers from female dogs.

Disposable diapers are different for male and female dogs.

Often you see a belly band (shown below on the right) for male dogs. The bellyband covers your dog’s penis and wicks urine away from his body.

Bellybands are attached with velcro, so they are adjustable, to fit your dog’s body.  You will also need male diapers.

Of course you wouldn’t use a bellyband with a female dog.

How you deal with your dog’s incontinence depends upon your dog’s age, diet, and the reasons for his incontinence. No matter how you look at it, dog incontinence products can be your best friend.

Never punish your dog without determining the facts first. He needs your loyalty and love more than ever now.
